An underground life since the Middle Ages
Rochemenier
Located in Western France, between the Loire valley and the Atlantic coast, the cave dwelling village museum invites you to discover the underground visitable of the village.
Rochemenier Village Museum invites you on a journey in the footsteps of our ancestors.
Since 1967, the museum has presented two old underground farms, out of the 40 located in the village.
A unique underground lifestyle in the Loire valley!
Deep within the caves, the soul of the Troglodytes!

Underground freshness.
Remember to bring a layer.
In the heart of the troglodytic village of Rochemenier, the museum occupies ancient dwellings dug directly into the soft limestone (falun). This remarkable site tells the story of the inhabitants who, since the Middle Ages, shaped the rock to live, work, and shelter within it.
Through a scenographic tour, discover homes, stables, barns, and an underground chapel, all passionately restored.
Collections of objects, tools, and photos trace the daily life of the Troglodytes in the 19th century.
A visit combining authenticity, education, and emotion, for young and old alike!
